The Essence of Work Felt by an 18-Year Nurse: The Gap Between Expectations and Reality, and the Reality of Reemployment

Hello. I am an operating room PA nurse who has spent 18 years working alongside patients in the intense and demanding environment of a hospital.

Over nearly two decades—long enough for “mountains and rivers to change twice”—we begin our careers with many expectations, yet often find ourselves discouraged by the harsh realities of the medical field. This gap becomes even more pronounced when we face career transitions or reemployment. Today, as professionals in our 40s and 50s, I would like to share a deeper reflection on the true essence of work that we encounter.

1. The Gap Between Expectations and Reality: Why Do We Burn Out?

When we first earn our license and step into clinical practice, we carry a profound sense of mission—the noble calling of saving lives. But what does reality look like?

Endless overtime, emotional labor, and high-intensity tasks that demand precision and advanced skills dominate our daily lives.

In particular, as an operating room PA nurse, the gap between the level of expertise we possess and our position within the hospital system can sometimes feel disheartening. Even with the title of an 18-year veteran, stepping into the reemployment market exposes us to cold, impersonal criteria: age, salary expectations, and speed of adaptation.

The fatigue we feel stems from this very gap—between the respect we expected for our experience and the efficiency-driven demands of the market.

2. Bridging the Reemployment Gap: Reinterpreting Experience

One of the biggest barriers when preparing for reemployment is the fear:
"Can I really start again at this age?"

However, 18 years of experience is not just a number. It represents:

  • Clinical judgment in critical situations
  • Coordination and leadership within medical teams
  • Intuition built from thousands of real-life cases

These are assets that no novice nurse can replicate.

  • Hard Skills: Surgical assistance and procedural expertise
  • Soft Skills: The ability to detect subtle patient changes and communicate effectively within a medical team

By integrating these, we must redefine our value as a “non-substitutable professional.”

Closing the reemployment gap is not about simply accepting a lower salary—it is about demonstrating how our seasoned expertise directly contributes to hospital efficiency and patient outcomes.

3. The Essence of Work: Protecting ‘Self’ While Creating Value

So, what is the true essence of work?

In the past, work was primarily about survival, and loyalty to an organization was considered a virtue. But now, in our mid-40s and beyond, the essence of work should shift toward “sustainable self-realization.”

Hospitals remain busy, and reality is still demanding. Yet, if a single decision we make can change a patient’s prognosis, or if our guidance can become a compass for junior nurses, then our work already holds immense value.

While money and recognition matter, what truly sustains a long career is self-efficacy—the belief that our skills are contributing meaningfully to society.

Conclusion: Nurses in Their 40s and 50s—Tying Their Shoelaces Again

Are you standing at the crossroads of reemployment or career change?
Are you feeling disillusioned by the gap between expectations and reality?

We have already proven ourselves. Eighteen years of dedication never betrays us.

Rather than seeing this gap as a crisis, I hope you can embrace it as a “reset”—a moment to recalibrate your pace of life and redefine the meaning of your work.

To all fellow nurses, whether under the bright lights of the operating room or walking the corridors of the ward—I sincerely support you.

Our experience is not just a record of the past.
It is the key that unlocks the future.
